HONGKONG, 10th October, 1889.
As promised to the late Colonial Secretary, and for the information of the Committee appointed to report on the question of the proposed increase in the Salaries of the Civil Servants of this Colony, I have now the honour to bring before notice the following particulars shewing the increase of the rentals of
your the houses of the type most frequented by Europeans of moderate means.
Houses at Richmond Terrace, Mosque Terrace, Seymour Terrace, The Albany, and Robinson Road, which were let a few years ago for $480 a year, now realise $660 and $720, and those houses which formerly let for $840 cannot now be rented for less than $1,080 to $1,200 a year. And, speaking generally, rentals for all classes of dwelling houses under $1,200 a year have increased at about the same rate.
